MANHATTAN BEACH

The Manhattan Beach Unified School District is responsible for public education in the city of Manhattan Beach, California. It oversees five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.

MBUSD serves the city of Manhattan Beach. In addition, residents of Hermosa Beach may choose to attend Redondo Union High School of the Redondo Beach Unified School District or the Mira Costa High School of MBUSD.

The district as a whole received a score of 906 on the 2006 California Academic Performance Index, making it one of California's best performing districts. Each individual school also ranks at the top of its respective category:

The school district had a history, under the guidance of Jerry Davis, of ignoring and otherwise failing to accommodate the needs of special education students. One such case was that of Douglas Shulby in 1998, where he was forcibly removed from the Mira Costa campus grounds by law enforcement and school officials due to a failure to accommodate his neurological disability, called Asperger's Syndrome.

HERMOSA BEACH

The Hermosa Beach School District is responsible for public education in the city of Hermosa Beach, California. It oversees two elementary schools and one middle school. The school district is supported by the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation whose mission is creating awareness, commitment and financial support for continued educational development of the students and teachers of the Hermosa Beach City School District, thereby ensuring competence, competitiveness and creativity through community, corporate and private sector involvement.

In 2005, Hermosa Valley and Hermosa View schools were honored as the U.S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon Schools along with approximately 300 schools across the nation. The award was based on academic achievement. Both schools were honored as National Blue Ribbon Schools along with 33 California schools and less than 300 schools across the nation. Hermosa schools' Blue Ribbon Schools Program Award was based on academic achievement. Hermosa schools are among the top 10% of schools in the state with students scoring at or above the 90% in the highest grade tested in reading and math. For the award, the Department of Education reviewed growth in scores over a three-year period.

REDONDO BEACH

The Redondo Beach Unified School District is located in Redondo Beach, California. The school district consists of eight elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, one continuation school, and one adult school. RBUSD was established in 1993 by the consolidation of Redondo Beach City School District and South Bay Union High School District.

In addition, residents of Hermosa Beach may choose to attend Redondo Union High School of RBUSD or the Mira Costa High School of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District.
